Anime North Is Canada's Premiere Anime Convention

Many otaku flock to Toronto, Canada every spring in order to participate in Anime North, a convention which caters to many different subcultures such as steampunk, gaming, and- of course-pvc figure anime.

Anime North is the largest and most prestigious fan run PVC figures convention in all of Canada, and possibly the whole of North America as well. Typically held in May, the 2011 Anime North convention will be held the weekend of May 27th through the 29th. Hotel information for the 2011 convention will be available sometime soon, and official pre-registration will open to convention goers in early January 2011.

Anime North has many attractions for anyone who enjoys Anime, Steampunk, and other geek subcultures: lots of Anime viewing rooms; a dealer's room filled with videos, comics, games, and other merchandise; an incredible and impressive array of cosplayers, including regular costume contests and genre fashion shows (such as Steampunk and Geisha fashion); and a wide variety of honored guests that range from famous roleplaying game authors to Japanese professional wrestlers.

Canadian fans of popular Anime PVC such as Naruto Shippenden, Pokemon and Digimon, Full Metal Alchemist, and Yu-Gi-Oh! can find and connect with other fans of their favorite Anime, as well as buy merchandise and licensed products that are otherwise difficult to find in person.

The Use of CGI in Today's Anime

What is CGI?

This can be quite a large undertaking to explain but I'll do so in relation to Anime. The complete definition utilizes a number of methods that are not commonly used in Anime but are rather incorporated from time to time. Computer-generated imagery or CGI has gown in popularity and use as personal computers and graphics processors or GPUs have advanced. The forefathers of animation setup some pretty timeless standards that we still teach today. Many of these standards have been incorporated into modern software applications. The same principles of motion and composition are used in popular CG movies like Shrek and Kung Fu Panda. For the most part in regards to anime stuff, CGI has completely modernized and revolutionized creatives and animators around the world. Much if not all that was done by hand in the past can now be done digitally on the computer. Studios were able to reduce their number of employees and streamline their workflow in faster and more efficient ways. Computers are now the "materials and supplies".

Popular uses of CGI in Anime

Many studios utilize a combination of traditional animation and CG. However, more and more are moving almost entirely to digital. Some studios have strong roots in traditional hand drawn animation cels but choose to use CG for backgrounds and complicated scenes. A subset of CG is 3D CG which uses three dimensional space to animate. For instance when doing action sequences and for situations when a giant robot is transforming, it can be easier to do this in 3D. If there is a need to re-use the motion and maybe apply another camera angle, it can simply be pulled up in the program and manipulated as needed. There is no longer a need to redraw the complicated sequences again and again. Much of the old figures model like Voltron would re-use the same old stale sequences with different backgrounds. As a viewer, I would pick up on this after the first few episodes and grow tired of it. Now, consider the sheer hours and manpower it took to make just the one sequence and the fact that because of this they were willing to re-use and recycle old work.

Has CGI Changed Anime?

As a fan of Anime PVC since the early 80's, I've seen quite a bit of change in the quality of art, styles and frequency of work. So has CGI changed Anime and if so, has it been for the better? CGI has drastically changed the way anime is made and how it is defined but in Japan with the support of fans, there has been a somewhat strict adherence to the rules of Anime. Most studios are not quick to adopt a new technology or perceived change in the industry. I think that while I do notice changes that I may or may not like (some really stand out), for the most part, I feel that I'm still watching Anime and still enjoying the spirit of how it was made in the past. The categorization of Anime is expanding with each new video put out. Many now question if certain films like Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within should even be considered Anime since it was done completely in 3D for an American market. However, we must keep in mind that it was created primarily in Japan by one of the major players in Japanese animation. I can't say I have an answer to this issue.

Is Anime the Same As Manga?

On the whole the main difference between anime stuff and manga is a simple one which is that one is animated and one is in the form of pictures and words on paper. While this is the main difference there are also many other more subtle differences that would go unnoticed if a person was to say for example only watch an anime version of a series that is also in a manga format.

In Western culture, Anime is spoken in reference to the animation that originated in Japan whereas in Japan, Anime PVC refers to animation as a whole. Japanese animation was produced since around 1917, however it wasn't really until the 70's and 80's that the look and feel of the anime that we are familiar with today began to become popular. During that time, series such as "Gundam" became popular in Western countries. This contrasts with manga greatly as manga in its most simple form is a Japanese comic art book. Modern Manga originated during the Second World War, and was influenced greatly by the western comic books and pre-war Japanese art.

Most anime would originate from manga however this does not mean that they are the same. The reason for this is that the main purpose of PVC figures and manga is to make profit and so the costs of production of the two are very different. Manga would cost less as is it is in paper form and so a lot of detail can go into the contents of it also the amount of detail is essential as most anime originate from manga. However some of the detail needs to be left out at times when it comes to anime and the reason for this is that the costs of production of anime is a lot higher than manga and so some key sub plots of certain characters must be left out due to budget cuts. Another difference would be that sometimes the anime would be moving too fast in terms of story development and in order to prevent this from happening some anime go away from the plot in what is known as a filler arc which has no relevance to the actual plot. This is not the case in the manga.

Overall the differences between manga and anime are not that much as both do tell the same story if they are both the same series.

What is Anime

In English, main dictionary sources define anime stuff as "a Japanese style of motion-picture animation" or "a style of animation developed in Japan". Since anime or anim?shon is used to describe all forms of animation, Japanimation is used to distinguish Japanese work from that of the rest of the world.

In more recent years, anime has also frequently been referred to as manga in European countries, a practice that may stem from the Japanese usage: In Japan, manga can refer to both animation and comics (although the use of manga to refer to animation is mostly restricted to non-fans).

prepainted kit often draws influence from manga, light novels, and other cultures. Anime can be broadcast on television and is widely distributed via any form of media presentations, such as DVD, video and the internet. Anime is sometimes referred to as Japanimation, but this term has fallen into disuse

However, if you travel to the west you will find that the word pvc figure anime is not always considered as referring to animation but it is thought to be a subset of animation. Anime is available outside of Japan in localized form. Anime has also been a commercial success in Asia, Europe and Latin America, where anime has become even more mainstream than in the United States.

Anime or manga tends to be targeted at teenage or young male adults. Anime is often considered a form of limited animation. When it comes to anime, it is just like any other entertainment medium in which the actual story lines are used to actually represent the major genres of the actual fiction.

Anime has a dedicated fan following in English speaking countries, particularly active on the Internet, and at conventions regularly held throughout the US and UK.
